Design Scope: A good “zhjoosh”

Welcome to home for myself, husband Ryan, toddler Nellie & our two dogs Gnocchi & Spritz — we moved to the Adelaide Hills about 5 years ago & I love our house. Big reno/ extension plans are in the works but, realistically a few years off. In the meantime, I wanted to make our home feel more us, give it a good zhjoosh & add some extra storage because... kids (am I right?).

The previous owners popped in an Ikea kitchen before sale, which is super functional — I just needed to add some personality. We primed & painted the existing kitchen, updated the handles to Lo & Co Capri’s in tumbled brass, I had the plumber husband swap the sink over to one large trough & change to a tumbled brass mixer tap. We had Angus (Daly Built) box out our existing rangehood & clad it in Laminex Heritage 150 panelling, and he also built out the island end panels ready to be tiled. The tiling — I love this combo of tumbled marbles in a 4 x 4 checkerboard. Behind the sheer curtains is our walk-in pantry & behind that, a mudroom, so luckily a lot hides away in here.

Giving us extra storage & making the small dining area far more useable is the banquette seat. Ryan built & clad this, and I DIY’d the upholstered seat top.

Now, the space feels layered, lived in & far more reflective of how we love to live as a family — relaxed, welcoming & full of fun. It’s proof that you don’t always need a full renovation to completely transform the feeling of a home. Sometimes, it’s the thoughtful updates, clever storage & material layering that make the biggest impact while you wait for the bigger plans to unfold.
